Interior Architecture, equipment and furniture in special areas (catalogue room, general reading room, public cafeteria, great hall, auditorium)

Porfírio Pardal Monteiro’s project for the Biblioteca Nacional (1954) was designed to provide modern and fitting facilities for the institution that had previously been housed in part of the São Francisco Convent in Chiado. The architecture of the new building, incorporated into the University City cluster, was once again characteristic of the facilities conceived by the architect throughout the decade.

The main public spaces were treated by Daciano da Costa in a clear dialogue with the major structural elements that characterized them and in the understanding of the differences of scale involved, in an exercise of remarkable formal consistency.
