Industrial Design. Urban Design

Hitorical Center of Beja, 2004, Beja

Integrated systems of Urban Design and Public Art (special urban equipment and monument information signage).

The main objective of this project, according to the purpose of the commission, was to find ways to help boost a distinctive image of the city: the aim was to counteract the sameness ensuing from the use of standard models produced by the big companies that dominate the international market for urban equipment. Thus, it was taken that the equipment and the information signage for the old centre of Beja should reflect some “specific historical and cultural components” that could be recognized as “elements of the identity of Beja city and its region”. Special importance was assigned to the “work of artisans and artists who had the most impact on the cultural image of the city”. Here, Urban Design aims to create singular objects; for this, it should be more like artistic research.
