Design for Context

Coliseu dos Recreios, 1993, Lisbon

Refurbishment of equipment and furniture (refurbishment of audience seating; box seating; disassemblable stalls; dressing rooms; restaurant areas; music shop and small auditorium).

The Coliseu dos Recreios in Lisbon has long been synonymous with popular entertainment. This was the spirit that established the starting point for the design of the furniture for the refurbishment: playful solutions, of objects-characters from the world of showbusiness (Carmen, Luciano, François França chairs), capable of populating the spaces with something more than a cold, rational and abstract expression. In the final design, the structure of the existing audience seating would be restored, and new models would only be designed for the boxes and cafeteria.

Although discreet, the references to memory are still legible: in one case, the typology and proportions of the classic theatre box chair are used (at the same time a tribute to Aldo Rossi), with upholstery in a festive and theatrical colour.

Later on, for the interior design project of Casa da Música (2004-2005), Daciano adapts the design of the Coliseu chair so that the chairs could be stackable.
