SPAL Crockery, 1970

Porcelain dining, tea and coffee sets.

The competition promoted by Sociedade de Porcelanas de Alcobaça aimed to “find new ideas in terms of shape and decoration, for tableware for domestic use”. Daciano da Costa’s proposal was unanimously praised “for its consistency with the properties of porcelain”, “for its formal quality, its creative spirit and the novelty of the proposal”.

Following the competition, some prototype porcelain pieces were made, and studies of decorative motifs for colour glazing which accentuated the geometry of the proposal (combining Pop imagery and a certain reinterpretation of Art Deco).
