Urban Renewal of Praça da Figueira, 1999, Lisbon

Urban Design and Public Art.

As part of the project for the regeneration of the Praça da Figueira, the surrounding buildings will be covered with a system of glazed tiles (azulejos) compositions, in what has been understood as a Public Art operation (because it is closely related to the Fine Arts). The use of a restricted range of colours and graphic motifs, taken directly from the tradition of façade tiles, and the systematic exploration of the possible combinations so as to define a typology of patterns and the gradation of their density, made it possible to establish a series of application criteria that boost the unity of the different façades in the square while respecting their original diversity. The equestrian statue standing in the square was also relocated to adjust its relationship with the Pombaline urban fabric.

Daciano Collection, result of the objects designed for this project and before for the Historic Centre of Beja (2004), remains today among the outdoor furniture lines, presented by the Atelier Daciano da Costa, produced and marketed by Larus.
