Madeira Hilton Hotel | Madeira Palácio, 1970, Funchal

Interior Architecture and furniture of the lobby, public areas and restaurant-grill.

Interpreting the tendencies of the hotel industry at that time, the design of this action took its character from a series of regional formal motifs. The traditional wicker toboggans, typical of the island, are remembered in the sled base support and in the recurring curved structures, which in some cases also result from the reinterpretation of the geometry of vats and barrels, associated with the production of Madeira wine. The colours and patterns chosen for woven and straw-filled surfaces, with a strong artisanal component, are other examples of this regionalist attitude.

Later on, for the design of the Cultural Center of Belém project (1990-1992), Daciano da Costa reintroduces furniture from previous works, such as the Palácio chair that had been designed for the Madeira Hilton Hotel/ Madeira Palácio (1970-1971).
