Daciano da Costa, a prominent figure in Portuguese industrial design, advocates for a practice rooted in functionality, utility, and integration within industrial production, consciously distancing himself from the tradition of erudite craftsmanship. His transition from painting to design was ideologically motivated, driven by the aspiration to enhance everyday life through the mass production of thoughtfully conceived objects. A critic of cultural trivialisation, Daciano da Costa regards design as an essential discipline for imbuing the urban environment with meaning and coherence, particularly within the context of a post-industrial and postmodern society.
